Irresponsible dog owners are in for a rude awakening and some stinking hefty fines as the recently growing popularity of dog poop DNA testing is sweeping the nation. DNA testing to keep resident dogs on file is being implemented in cities and complexes across the country

Apartment complexes nationwide are now scooping up dog poop DNA services to track down and fine the community “poo- petrators.”

Dog feces piling up on the lawn is not just unsightly, but the waste can actually contain bacterial or viral hazards. WebMD pets section lists that some of these dangers include E. coli, salmonella, cryptosoirudium, hookworm, roundworm, or salmonella (to name a few) which can pose health risks to other pets, and even children.

The Seattle Times has just reported that the services are now actively being implemented in a couple dozen apartment complexes, and Chicago has been on board for a couple years.

According to the Chicago Tribune, “In the Chicago area, a Barrington condo association and a Plainfield apartment complex subscribe to a service that helps connect dog poop to the dog owners who don’t clean up after their pets. When caught, owners face steep fines that increase if the offense continues. At the 340-unit Plainfield apartment complex, 40 percent of residents have canine companions.” Both of these communities are now working with a dog poop DNA matching company called “Poo Prints.”

PooPrints allows you to send (for a fee) a swab of dog saliva for DNA testing to be kept on file. The company proceeds to keep the DNA records for future reference if a mess is left behind and they want to match it to the culprit. The plan is for the complex to then use this information to fine resident dog owners for messy mutts.
